I've always wondered why the school doesn't choose some local spots like 北潭涌度假營, which allows those hyper-energetic kids to expend some energy doing sports all day long for 2 days. Well, it's always hard to understand unreasonable people, aka bosses.

students complaining ... and with reasons!
My evening students complained to me tonight. About the school. About how it mismanaged the class schedule.
Background: My class meets every Wednesday night. That means Dec 17, 24, and 31 would be class time. School put those dates on the schedule.
A few days ago, the school officials were having a meeting about a reschedule of the evening classes because some evening students requested to have 24 and 31 nights off. A decision was made: No evening classes on 17 because day school would have a Christmas trip to China, and no evening classes on 24 and 31 due to strong requests from students. My class was the minority. An 8-student class, at least 5 wanted to have classes on 24 and 31 (those 5 were present in this week's lecture). I voiced out my students' request to the school yesterday.
Boss (暗暗尋尋): 八個學生 ...? 好啦，好啦，阿sir，我地會 contact 下其他同學，遲下通知你啦! 阿sir，你24、31上到堂嗎?
Sir (寸爆地): 我當然上到啦，你俾我個 schedule 有24、31，我當然係 ok 先應承教啦! 我係預左上堂架! 無諗住放假架!
Boss: ................. ok ok ............................. 咁我盡快 confirm 你啦 ... 唔該 ...
結果: 學校話「大半班」同學 24、31 都唔 ok，所以會無班，呢科順延 3 個禮拜 ... 有乜可能 ... 大 ... 半 ... 班 ...???
呢個世界，經常都懲罰守規矩既人，難怪 train 到 d 香港人咁x樣! (怒火中燒)

A new fellow lecturer of mine asked me today, "Why doesn't the school schedule the school trip AFTER the exam? Now that the exam is scheduled after the school trip then the Christmas and New Year holiday, I think more students are going to funk the exams."
Good question!
As a conspiracy theorist, I responded to my colleague, "You know, if the exam is scheduled before the holiday, then the school trip would need to be rescheduled CLOSER to the holiday, which means higher price. And our dear boss is here for the sole purpose of profit maximization."
My colleague was speechless. I guess my answer beats his question.

打邊爐 with 新學生
新學年僅個半月，但新生熟得很快，經常相約玩樂。已約我幾次但我沒有出席，學生盛意「拳拳到肉」，於是出席一下他們的gathering，今次是火鍋，地點為TST新港中心-稻香。一行13人，前排紅衣者不是本人學生。後生仔女果然無乜manner，食完餐火鍋我都唔知條友咩名，係乜水既朋友；作為成熟的成人，我最後當然也問了他高姓大名。當晚也是其中兩位學生的生辰。

金彩海鮮酒家 last day
乳豬好好味!
There's nothing special about this restaurant: My family loves to have dinner here. Food is reasonably priced, tastes good. It's located in TST East, a place where my family loves to be in.
Now this restaurant is history. Before it was closed tonight, my WHOLE family had dinner there. For the very last time. The boss said the landlord raised the rent a lot, and he decided to happily close down the crap.
It could be a smart choice!

Mid-term exam upcoming
This coming week is the mid-term exam week. Last week I was busy setting exam questions, and this week I'll be busy grading.
Yes, I do love the teaching part of my job, but grading really really sucks!

企一晚，為乜?
I guess the moral standard of today's HK kids is really on the down trend. An ex-student who has been bothering me by SMS just emailed me, saying, "hmm ... i slept with a guy i met at a disco last week. i wonder how i should handle this crap coz now i'm now having 2 men." (我翻譯得太文雅 :P)
A 20-year-old chick doing this ... sigh ... Looking back when I was still 20, I was still like 一飯, knowing nothing about relationships.

「舊」學生仔女踩單車
I could tell this! If they planned a BBQ BEFORE the exam, how on earth would they not plan another event AFTER the exam? Biking was all fun, but it was also tiring. After all, I'm about 15 years older than these kids are.

students questioned me
I'm teaching 3 classes this year, 2 subjects, totalling 5 courses. Out of the 3 classes, 2 are old students: they studied here last year for the prep diploma. These 2 classes were resided on the 2/F last year, which is a newly renovated floor with brand new equipment such as new computers, projecters, and A/Cs. They all enjoyed it last year.
This year they are "promoted" to the 4/F, which is the oldest floor of the school. So my students had these questions: Why the computers suck here? Why the projecters suck here? Why everything sucks here?
My conspiracy prevails every time I encounter this. I told my students, "You all were the new customers here last year. Smart businessmen give their best to the new customers to lure them to stay. Once they decided to stay and PAID, the smart businessmen would then give the OLD customers what they actually deserve, which means 4/F to you all."
Again, my students are loving what I said. I try to act like the 長毛 at school. That makes them love and hate me.

病態朋友回歸，齊訪深圳書城

美友回港，遇著小弟未開學，於是北望神州，昂步仰首往少年宮書城。
因兩人不好滾不好骨，極少北上，小弟惟有花時間上網找尋前往目的地之方法。羅湖東鐵站與當地的地鐵站幾是相連的，對身為現任及過氣美燦的我們也算友善。當地的單程票不是「票」，是一個 plastic token，用法像香港的八達通，但出閘時卻是把「膠銀」丟在出閘機內，感覺有趣也兒戲!
經過約30分鐘的地鐵車程，終到達目的地 - 少年宮站，書城也就近在咫尺。書城內有Pizza乞、老千拉麵等熟悉且無良的食肆，也有一些名不經傳的「地道」餐館。經多番思量後，我們決定益老千拉麵，可見餐館質素之高。
匆匆的老千餐過後，第一站是音樂、電影部，CD, VCD, DVD 滿目皆是，但我們似未熱身，故未有出手。「城」內還有轉攻大專生的書局 (我逗留了很久哩) 和為藝術家、攝影師而設的書海。眼花了!
結果買了四本大學教科書及一本攝影書，三百人仔有找!
有時間定必走訪其他深圳書城，很抵哩!
小插曲: 城內有免費「自助」 locker，用者按掣拿票，隨即有 locker 門打開；票上有 locker number 及條碼，用者取行李時只需往 scan 條碼，locker 門立時打開，蠻聰明! 但小弟樣衰，拿行裝時 scanner 讀不到條碼，小弟惟有獻醜，致電服務台大講普通話，難忘也!
註: 城內頗多保安，不宜拍照。

2007-08 年度畢業禮 暨 開學禮 = 粥
What a joke! The ceremony was like a TVB award presentation. The main objective was to let the new comers know how "well" the school treated the graduates by presenting as many "recognition certificates" as possible, including the "Best Student Award" to a chick student who RARELY showed up in class. I once confronted my boss about this student's attendance record, and my boss told me that the student was living in Macau and it was hard for her to find a place to live in HK (blah blah blah), so that the school was being very considerable by giving her an exception on attendance requirements.
I shouldn't have shown up ... NUFF SAID!

hey! HK kids, what the xxxx is going on?
A student, 20, came to me right after class and started quite an OPEN discussion with me in front of the classmates:
學生 (高聲地): Sir, 有無興趣一齊返大陸玩玩?
Sir (冷淡地): 玩乜?
學生 (猶疑地): hmm ... 我同 firm (學生係 CPA firm part-timer) 既同事去大陸玩 ...
Sir (不耐煩地): 咁即係玩乜?
學生: 嘻嘻 ... 都係玩男人玩既野啦 ...
Sir (汗顏): 我唔興玩呢 d 野 ...
I dunno what u think ... I shared it with one of my colleagues (male) and both of us were amazed by the fact that the student discussed it with me so OPENLY, that he was shameless in discussing such a topic so OPENLY with his TEACHER. I have some thoughts:

I dunno what u think ... I shared it with one of my colleagues (male) and both of us were amazed by the fact that the student discussed it with me so OPENLY, that he was shameless in discussing such a topic so OPENLY with his TEACHER. I have some thoughts:
- I personally think if one loves to mess around that's his/her own matter to mind. If he/she tries to pass this on to me, no damned way!
- Should I refine the way I present myself in class? Maybe I'm behaving like I love messing around? hmmm ...
- What the heck is in the mind of today's kids?
- Did he really MEAN it?
